Engell, Director of the English department of Harvard University Lectured in SIS

Dec. 18, 2007, SIS

On the afternoon of December 18 ,2007, Classroom 118 of Building East 6 of SIS was fully seated. James Engell, the director of the English department of Harvard was giving us a brilliant lecture about Samuel Taylor Coleridge, an English lake poet.

Prof. Engell started his lecture from the experiences of Coleridge’s life. He introduced the misfortunes of his family which
overtook him in his childhood and the traumas that these misfortunes had brought. And then through combining the poetries he created in his early, middle and late period, Prof. Engell analyzed the influences that all these misfortunes had brought to his
creation. By revealing those unknown stories of this mysterious genius poet, Prof. Engell provided a new perspective for the
audience to understand Coleridge. Prof. Engell used simple words to reflect profound meanings, which not only enabled the
audience to appreciate the charm of poetry but also provoked the audience’s ponder on the philosophical problems mentioned
in the lecture. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Engell patiently and comprehensively answered all the questions raised by the
audience, from which all the audience benefited a lot.

An hour and a half flied away in the eloquence of a master of literature. Many students, who wished to learn more, made further communication with Prof. Engell after the lecture. Just as the vice dean of our school,  Prof. Yin Qiping remarked, we all have
benefited a lot from this lecture
