Dr. Carol Fraser, professor of Glendon College of York University, was invited by College of International Studies of Zhejiang University to deliver a lecture on the afternoon of April 23, bearing the title of Developing Reading Fluency in an L2: Theory to Practice.
Dr. Carol Fraser, a well-known academically productive scholar, focuses her researches into the theory and practice of applied linguistics, including second language education , psycholinguistics and second language acquisition . Her contributions to the research on L2 methodology , the development of proficiency in an L2 with a particular focus on reading, writing, vocabulary and critical thinking in an academic setting are very significant and play a very important role in foreign language teaching and acquisition. In her two-hour lecture, Dr. Carol Fraser talked mainly about reading fluency and reading rate, reading processes, instructional implications for fluency development, role of rate in reading theory and research on the text processing abilities of L2 readers.
The lecture was presided by Prof. He Lianzhen, Vice-chair of College of International Studies of Zhejiang University and more than 100 teachers and students attended the lecture. All those present agreed that the lecture covered a wide range of knowledge about second language acquisition and they had benefited a lot from Dr. Carol Fraser research on second language acquisition. After the lecture , some teachers and students had a heated discussion with Dr . Carol Fraser about the academic research and issues that they are interested in.
