On the afternoon of May 16, 2005 and in the morning of May 18, at the invitation of the Institute of Intercultural Communication, School of International Studies, Zhejiang University, Professor Hu Wenzhong , former Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Now President of China Association for Intercultural Communication, and President of China Association for Teaching
English , successfully delivered us two lectures entitled respectively " What is a Good Language Learner" and "On Empirical Research in Intercultural Communication", on Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University. His interesting and knowledgeable lectures were warmly welcomed by many teachers and students who are from different institutes and departments.
Prof. Hu has devoted himself to English teaching and research, intercultural communication research and research on Australian literature, with a great publication of many books and thesis. He is thus invited to be the visiting scholar and researcher by many overseas universities.
In his first lecture Prof. Hu expounded a variety of language learning strategies to help students solve problems in English learning . Based on these strategies , he shares with students some typical case studies and his personal experience, through which audience there felt the great encouragement and drive to be a good language learner.
Mainly for the teaching staff and graduates, the second lecture focused on the empirical research in intercultural communication. A detailed comparison was made of empirical research in intercultural communication in the US and China to show that such research has been playing a dominant role in the US in sharp contrast with the present situation in China. Prof. Hu further gave an introduction to the relevant methods and format of how to make empirical researches in intercultural communication,
with the support of some instructive and vivid comments from Chinese and overseas scholars.
Prof. Hu's lectures reveal to us such an interesting and novel perspective in language study and research with rich citation that all the teachers and students felt greatly attracted. After the lectures, Prof. Hung answered the questions which were put to him by those earnest teachers and students . His wonderful lectures were thought highly by all the audience present.
