July 14, the Neighborhood Service Activity in Xixi initiated by volunteers from SIS, Zhengjiang university went as scheduled in the meeting room of Qiuzhi Community. Present at the meeting were: Luo Changxian---deputy secretary of party committee office in Xixi campus, An Wenying---deputy secretary of party committee and chairperson of Labor Union of SIS, Wu Chang---vice chairperson of Labor Union, Jiao Huahong---director of SIS Youth Affairs Committee, and a number of teachers and graduate students. Guided by Chen Yongchao, the publicity and party affair worker in Huayuanting, students from primary and middle schools of Qiuzhi, Xiamateng and Huayuanting communities came quite early to the assembly hall.
At the meeting, the director of neighborhood party and administrative office announced the name list of the volunteers, among whom were 14 young and middle-aged teachers and graduate students. Those volunteers showed their greatest willingness to listen attentively to the views of the masses, find out their demands and offer them services concerning English study. In addition, the labor union presented the community with some English reading materials published by Oxford Press, which was a great addition to the neighborhood library. Then, Prof. Dr. Zhou Xing, Assistant of Dean of SIS, gave the
students a lecture on English study. She communicated with the students in a lively style of dialog which was well received among them. Afterwards, the volunteers present were divided into three groups—respectively for the primary, the junior and the senior, so as to offer direct advice to the students and their parents, according to their different ages and characteristics.
This event was joint organized by SIS and Xixi Neighborhood, with the intention to bring useful resources into communities and promote the development of both the institution and the communities. It turned out to be a win-win try, with great improvementin the social image of SIS and the communities’ better understanding of the college.
