Talent Training in Philosophical Eyes

date:2010-10-28

2 pm September 17, after Dean Steinmülle's lecture, SIS  presented the freshmen another excellent lecture given by Prof. Fan JiePing, Acting Deanof SIS.

For more than ten years, Prof. Fan had studied, lived and worked in Germany and had quite profound and original views on the standard and requirement of talents in the international situation. At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Fan ingeniously talked about the issue of talent training in the light of philosophy. "This is Timmanuel Kant, " he said, pointing to the man deep in thought on the screen, 'He once identified 'enlightenment' as 'to relieve people from the ignorance caused by themselves'." Such a special opening remark instantly captured the attention of all the students. Based on "the theory of enlightenment", Prof. Fan spontaneously led to an expectation "free yourself first on entering the Zhejiang University".

Then, Prof. Fan mentioned a number of prominent figures in the philosophical circle. He said that students should learn how to study after talking about a famous remark made by Wilhelm Von Humbodt: "education will eventually make teachers redundant'; he linked the topic of "the self-responsibility and social responsibility of an individual" with a maxim by Juergen Hubermas: "You are not the only one living on the world"; and he talked about "creative thinking" by referring to a statement by Marx: "Former philosophers always tried to explain this world, but our philosophy is about how to remold the World."… Prof. Fan was effortless skilful in associating the issue of talent training with celebrated dictums of western philosophers. His words were shining with the lusre of wisdom, which were all fresh and new to students. Besides, Prof. Fan emphasized that facing the international situation, in order to meet the requirement of the particularity and irreplaceablility of talents, English majors today should develop new thinking patterns on the ability of language and speaking, and on the competence of sociability and intercultural communication. He said that only in this way could Chinese university students hold the right of speaking on the international stage and become truly international talents.

Before the students realized, the two-hour came to the end. They were all deeply impressed by the love and enthuasim Prof. Fan had for philosophy and language.
