Prof. Ouhong--Famous Scholar from Sun Yat-Sen University Giving a Lecture in SIS

date:2010-10-28

On the afternoon of September 19th , in Room 227,  Building 5, Prof. Ou Hong, Ph D supervisor of English literature from the College of Foreign Languages, Sun Yat-Sen University, gave an entirely fresh and vivid academic lecture to teachers and students from School of International Studies on the topic of “On Research: How to Handle Some of the  Relations in the Research of Humanities and Social Sciences?”

At the very beginning, Prof. Ou Hong came straight to the point, saying that “study is a matter of time and patience and research means to go deeply into a subject.” He then employed such examples as “where has the silver gone during the two Opium Wars”to illustrate his point that to do real study, one should go beyond the restrictions of the disciplines and seek truth from facts. When it came to the core of the lecture—— How to handle several relations in research, Prof. Ou Hong made the best use of pictures, words and his own experience to explain the problems. “The two modes of thinking: “radial thinking and convergent thinking” showed the audience that the two had different functions and contributions in study; “Alertness and action” indicated that there were always some research topics and we should be able to pick out questions from what we take for granted and get down to study immediately; “width and depth” suggested that we should spare no effort to learn the traditional Chinese culture…

From T.S.Eliot to Qian Zhongshu, Hu Shi , from Indian folktales to the reasons why literature, history and philosophy in China are inseparable, the brilliant speech by this amiable scholar extended over an immense range of topics and triggered laughter in the hall from time to time. The lecture by Prof. Ou Hong was not at all dull, but interesting and enthusiastic. Like a summer breeze, it drove away people’s laziness and tiredness due to the high temperature of the days and aroused their interest and passion. With the inspiration of the lecture, the teachers and the students will carry on their research in broader fields.
