Professor Zhang Hui from University of International Relations Gives a Lecture at SIS

date:2010-10-28

On the afternoon of October 10, Professor Zhang Hui from University of International Relations, subeditor of Foreign Languages Research, gave a lecture entitled The Current Situation of Cognitive Linguistics Research Abroad at SIS.

Professor Zhang made a brief introduction to the origin and development of cognitive linguistics, explained its principles, theories and research approaches, and introduced the focuses of current researches. And there was a Q & A session after the report.

Many quotations and literatures from foreign specialists in this field were cited in his report as well as examples in English, ancient Chinese and contemporary Chinese, some of which were profound and humorous. The audience saw the grace of a specialist and the quality of a teacher from Professor Zhang’s report and found it most beneficial to their teaching and research.

Academically well-armed, Professor Zhang not only explained the interactive relations between Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Psychology, but also predicted the future trend of development in this area. Most admirable of all, when he has dug into this subject, he is still aware of its shortcomings. His practice of seeking truth from facts deeply impressed the audience.

Professor Zhang Hui has finished his postdoctoral research and published his monograph (Idioms and Their Comprehension: A Cognitive Semantic Perspective, Junshi Yiwen Publishing House, Beijing, 2003) and over ten academic theses. Besides, he hosts a website: http://coglingchina.anyp.cn , which is rather informative and covers many external links
