The Delegation of SIS Returns from the MUN with Great Honors

date:2010-10-28

The Delegation of SIS performs brilliantly at the Model United Nations (MUN) 2005 Xi’an in November. There are more than 200 aces from 36 universities representing over 30 “delegations”. Facing a number of masters from domestic leading comprehensive universities, like Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Renmin University of China, Xiamen University and Nankai University, our delegation wins altogether four important awards, namely Distinguished Delegation Award, Position Paper Award, Speech Award and Friendship Award,
which indicates a much better performance than that of the above-mentioned key universities.

The Delegation of SIS is made up of four senior English major from the class of Simultaneous InterpretationZhao Qi, Zhang Tianqiong, Jia Wen and Han Dan, and with Prof. Chen Gang and Mr. Zhu XiaoYu from the Institute of Translation Studies as the leader and tutor for the team. The leaders of SIS once put forward a new idea of teaching innovation: studying for the purpose of application, participating international exchange activities actively, and nurturing talents who can display fine qualities of Chinese people on the international stage. In order to carry out this new idea, the undergraduates of our university took part in the contest of MUN for the first time this year (postgraduates from different institutes entered MUN last year and won Speech Award), and made remarkable achievements after SIS offering the course of simultaneous interpretation on the basis of traditional interpretation and written translation.

United Nations Association of china (UNA-China), undertaken by Northwestern Polytechnical University, and sponsored by Australian AID and Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (AHREOC), hosts the Conference of MUN Commission on Human Rights 2005. The theme of the conference is “Strengthen the awareness of human rights; attach great importance to the protection of the human rights of the disadvantaged.” The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan personally sends the Commission his congratulatory speech to encourage contestants to both hold human rights of their own and respect that of others, help the strengthening of global cooperation and play their parts as global citizens in international affairs together with government
representatives and international officials. The judges are UN senior officials and experts, such as the Executive Director of
UNA-China, the Vice President of Chinese Human Rights Research Association, China’s ambassadors abroad, experts on international and UN issues, and the manager of international project in AHREOC.
MUN is an activity particularly organized for the youth by governmental and non-governmental organizations from all countries of the world. Young students play the roles of diplomats of different countries through the imitation of UN conference by experiencing the process of position statement, debate, negotiation, vote and the passage of resolutions all in English. In this way, MUN China makes Chinese students familiar with the operating mode of UN councils, acquaint them with world affairs, and strengthen their sense of responsibility in the future. It not only provides them with chances of enhancing their understanding of international affairs, especially the UN, but also improves their abilities of using English comprehensively and promotes their integrated qualities such as international politics. What’s more, MUN China even presents new ideas and oportunities for the foreign language teaching innovation in universities.
