SIS Holds Talk with German Konrad Adenauer Foundation on Cooperation

On the morning of November 28, at the invitation of Professor Fan Jieping, acting vice Dean of School of International Studies and director of the Institute of Germany Studies, Mr. Pete Irvine and Mr. Thomas Alff came to SIS and had close talks with the SIS students and teachers. Mr. Pete Irvine is the principal in Asian-Pacific Region of Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Mr. Thomas Alff director of Shanghai Office of the German Konrad Adenauer. Also present were members of the Institute of German Studies, including Dr. Li Yuan, associate professor, Mr. Li Zhanglin, and Ms. Du Xingzhi together with 5 undergraduates and graduates of German Language.
Prof. Fan Jieping, in his welcoming speech, introduced to the guests about Zhejiang University, development of School of International Studies as well as that of the Institute of German Studies. With the leading position of Zhejiang Province in the overall economic growth in China, and with much importance attached to students’ comprehensive competences so as to keep pace with the times, SIS makes great efforts to enhance students’ abilities of academic study and intercultural communication. In order to realize the goals, SIS insists that not only should students have a good command of foreign languages and literature, but also they need to touch upon such related areas as foreign culture, economy and politics. At the same time, SIS also encourages students to learn an second major or take some courses offered by different majors, which can help perfect their knowledge structure and enhance their competitiveness.
German Konrad Adenauer Foundation cooperates with Chinese universities, enterprises and both governmental and non-governmental organizations. After listening to the introduction, Mr. Thomas Alff expressed his appreciation on the achievements SIS has made. In addition, he conveyed his willingness to cooperate with SIS on the establishment of its provincial premium course called Economic German, the teaching and research on both Chinese and German area studies as well as scholarship programs for overseas students. He also invited students from Zhejiang University to take part in the intern projects planned by German Konrad Adenauer Foundation both inside and outside China. In the end, Prof. Fan Jieping expressed his heartfelt thanks to the guests for their visit and their sincerities for cooperation. He also hoped that the joint programs would go into effect in the near future.
