President Yang Wei Visits SIS

September 21st, 2006, Prof. Yang Wei, president of Zhejiang University, accompanied by his secretary, paid a visit to School of International Study, where he had an close talk with Prof. Dr. Ulrich Steinueller, Dean of SIS. Also present at the talk were Mr. Hu Songfa, Party Secretary of SIS, Prof. Fan Jieping, executive Vice Dean, and Prof., Yin Qiping, Vice Dean.
During the talk, SIS leaders reported to President Yang Wei on the restructuring and development that SIS had made in the past three years. SIS had made great efforts to replace departments with institutes, which rewarded SIS with considerable achievements in many areas such as scientific research, international exchanges, teaching and learning, and social service. In 2005, SIS succeeded in establishing its first Ph D program in English Language and Literature, which was a historic breakthrough to the college.
President Yang listened to the report with great interest and offered valuable advises and suggestions to SIS on its future development. He hoped that SIS would try its best in applying for the Ph D program in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in 2006. Besides, he also suggested that after receiving the second second-level-discipline Ph D program, SIS should set off for the goal of a first-level-discipline Ph D program.
Concerning the areas of scientific research and teaching and learning, President Yang called for SIS to keep up with the advanced counterparts at home and aboard in order to steadily strengthen its own ability to stand up to competition.
Furthermore, President Yang pointed out that one of the leading goals of Zhejiang University was internationalization. During the process of approaching this goal, SIS would play a strategic role. Hence, he sincerely hoped that SIS would make good use of its own advantages and make greater contributions to bridging Zhejiang University to the world.
