The First Mainland Lecture Delivered by Prof. Dr. Christiane Nord

date:2010-10-28

Prof. Dr. Christiane Nord, the representative of the second-generation Skopos-theorists, gave her first Mainland lecture at Zhejiang University, known as “Oriental Cambridge” and one of China’s leading universities, on March 2 when the Chinese people were still celebrating their traditional Chinese New Year.

This is the special lecture delivered by Prof. Nord during her first trip to Hangzhou, specially arranged by Prof. Steinmueller, the German dean of the School of International School, Zhejiang University and its Institute of Translation Studies based in Hangzhou, noted for her scenic West Lake and as the “city of heaven” described by the world-renowned Italian traveler Marco Polo.

Prof. Nord’s over-three-hour non-stop lecture entitled Intertextuality as a Translation Problem, which began with the Dean’s short introduction, was hailed as a great success by the professors and postgraduates as well as undergraduates present, including quite a few from local universities. On the basis of her own corpus of English, Spanish, French and German titles and headings, the lecturer applied the functional approach to the translation of intertextuality. She elaborated from various perspectives upon the intertextuality, which occurs in various forms and can be intended to serve all the functions in other types of text. Her wonderful and enthusiastic delivery impressed and benefited the large eager audience so much that they both consulted and challenged this world-famous translation scholar in an academic and professional way. Their seemingly endless question shooting was at long last stopped by the co-chair Prof. George Chen, who believed that the more-than-three-hour presentation & the question-and-answer session were too long for the jet-lagged retired professor despite her being energetic and dynamic by nature.

Prof. Nord’s 3-day tour of the paradise city alternated between sightseeing and lecturing. This soprano-scholar also watched some highlights of local operas with great interest. She was satisfied with her first lecture trip in Hangzhou.
