date:2011-04-26

 Apr.26,2011

At the joint invitation of the Center for East Asian Studies, School of Education, China Initiative and International Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Wu Zongjie, the head of the Institute of Intercultural Communication, began his 2-week visit in America from April 2nd. At the same time, he took part in the Annual Meeting, 2011, of American Educational Research Association in New Orleans and delivered a speech on the symposium of “Dialogue on Intercultural Education History” organized by the History Department of the association.

Professor Wu Zongjie delivered two public speeches during his visit in UW-Madison. The first one was “Diversification of Education: The Intercultural Interpretation of Historical Education Thinking”. Through the comparative research between the Confucian classics and Post-modern view of history, the lecture mainly discussed about the problem of diversification of education at present. By presenting the extraordinary diversified thought of Confucius, Professor Wu Zongjie rethought the fundamental values of the present “Multiculturalism” and the loss of cultural identity in China after the ban on ‘reading scriptures’ during the May 4th Movement. The second lecture was about the Interdisciplinary dialogue in cultural heritage studies. Taking two researches directed by himself as examples--“Study on the Cultural Memory of Shuiting Gate in Quzhou” and “Research on Cultural Heritage in Dongwu Mountain”--Professor Wuzongjie discussed the value of Confucius’ narration of history in promoting the Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies. Professors and scholars from different disciplines, such as History, Anthropology, Education, Sociology, Archeology, Media Studies and Chinese studies, all took an active part in the symposium. These academic activities embodied the attention of international academia towards the foundation of Chinese culture and the trend of interdisciplinary cooperation.

Yang Wei, the president of ZJU, visited UW-Madison at the end of February, laying a framework for the multi-level cooperation between our two universities.
