May.3o,2012

On the afternoon of May 17th, at gracious invitation of the Institute of German studies, Prof. Heike Rohmann, from the Institute of Language and Communication, TUB (Technical University of Berlin), made a speech on Cultural Memory for our teachers and students at Room 201, East 6. Prof. Li Yuan, deputy director of the Institute of German studies, hosted the lecture. German-major students of our school, dual-degree postgraduates from Germany and students of China Studies were present at the lecture.

As a long-term cooperative partner of the Institute of German studies and expert on cultural memory research, Prof. Rohmann will stay in ZJU to give lectures for two weeks as a part of the international dual degree program of postgraduate between ZJU and TUB, which is sponsored by DAAD. During the two weeks, he will provide courses related to cultural memory for German-major students and will probe into the performance of this program with teachers of German studies.

By displaying abundant picture materials with details, Prof. Rohmann’s brilliant report depicted German historical heritages since Middle Ages, especially those preserved in World War II, and their profound influence on human’s modern cultural life. Students were engrossed in the depth of German historical culture and gave an active feedback. After the speech, students raised their questions and discussed with Prof. Rohmann actively. The whole lecture ended in an easy and comfortable academic atmosphere.

This “German cultural memory” lecture activated students to learn German history, in order to expand their knowledge and deepen their understanding on Germany’s basic condition. While getting acquainted with other countries’ historical and cultural heritages, students are supposed to explore and think about the essence and dross of Chinese culture, with an expectation to improve their own professional qualities in the immersion of historical memory.
