On December 10th, Mrs. Mylene HARDY, the former SCAC (Service de Coopération et d'Action Culturelle) commissioner of Embassy of France in China for education, language and sport, visited our school at the invitation of the Institute of French Language and Culture for academic purpose, and delivered a lecture entitled “Bien communiquer en situation interculturelle” to all the students and faculty in the institute, who exchanged ideas with Mrs. Mylene HARDY on her ongoing postdoctoral research of communication studies.
Mrs. Mylene HARDY is a Doctor of Communication Studies, who is now engaged in postdoctoral research in this field. In the lecture, she used an easy approach to explain profound theories in terms of the principles of communication studies, the capacity of communication, and how to communicate skillfully in cross-cultural situations. Taking the comparison between Chinese and French culture as an example, she pointed out attention-worthy problems in cross-cultural communication process and offered practical solutions by using simple and clear French as well as interesting cases, which embodied the abstract academic concept in a lively way. What’s more, for better understanding, she also employed plenty of pictures and videos during the process. She said that learning a language is learning a culture, and those who major in French should not only master the language but also give due consideration to cultural phenomena and embrace culture differences with a tolerant and positive attitude. Her witty remarks and interactions with students climaxed the lecture time and again. Finally in a harmonious atmosphere, the lecture ended with warm applause.
Providing with abundant information, the well-organized lecture will be of great benefit for further studies, which not only broadens the listeners’ horizons but gives guidance in how to communicate skillfully in cross-cultural background as well.
Mrs. Mylene HARDY will continue to make a systematical interpretation for postgraduate students on cross-cultural communication courses in the following three days.
