March 18th, 2014

In March 2014, Ms. Sabine Prudent, the teacher from Institute of Language and Communication, Technical University of Berlin (TUB) was invited to give lectures in Institute of German Studies (IGS) under the frame of international master’s double degree program between TUB and ZJU. Since the program started in September 2010, grants from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) have took over 40 undergraduates, 14 postgraduates and several professors to TUB for exchange study or lecturing. Over 10 master students from Germany have also finished the studies in Zhejiang University under the frame of cooperation project. In the past 4 years, professors and scholars from TUB came to visit Zhejiang University every year. They brought new academic perspectives and research information to the teachers and students of IGS.

This time, Ms. Prudent brought us two seminars running on the subject of “cross-cultural communication” in movies and literature, which attracted a number of postgraduates and PhD students from IGS and many German teachers from other colleges in Zhejiang.

On the movie-themed seminars held on Mar. 4th and Mar. 6th, Ms. Prudent presented us Angst essen Seele auf directed by a famous German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 70s last century and Willkommen in Deutschland released in 2010. Through her interpretation of the movie plots and the emotion of characters as well as the analysis of social background and the comparison of these two movies, students got an overview of foreigners’ living condition in Germany and the changes in past 40 years. On this basis, Ms. Prudent shared her immigration life experience in Germany in past 20 years and communicated and discussed with all the attendees in the aspect of cross-culture.

On the literature seminars held on Mar. 10th and Mar. 11th, Ms. Prudent chose some immigration literature pieces written by Herta Müller, a Nobel Prize winner, and other famous writers from different countries with different immigration backgrounds, such as Yoko Tawada and Emine Sevgi Özdamar. By reading, discussion and presentation, all the attendeees had a deep analysis of German immigration literature in 20th century and the social issues, for example, immigrant identity, social exclusion, integration and so on. The seminars came to an end in a relaxing atomosphere. All the attendees benefited a lot and were longing for more.
