Doctoral Students of SIS Attended “AACL 2014” and Read out their Essays

AACL 2014, hosted by American Association for Corpus Linguistics and organized by Northern Arizona University, was successfully held from September 25th to 28th, 2014.
 
A number of international well-known linguistic scholars attended the conference, including Prof.Douglas Biber of Northern Arizona University, an expert on corpus linguistics; Prof. Mark Davies of Brighan Young University, the developer for Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA); Prof. Mike Scott of Aston University, an expert on corpus linguistics and the software author of WordSmith Tools; Prof. Laurence Anthony of Waseda University, the software author of AntConc; Prof. Michael Barlow of Auckland University, the software author of MonoConc; Prof. Randi Reppen of Northern Arizona University and other experts and scholars. The conference was divided into three sessions, during which more than 100 representatives from over 10 countries and areas read out 65 essays, covering various fields like corpus-based approach, corpus studies of western and eastern language, studies of second language writing and phraseology, multidimensional register studies, grammar studies, studies of discourse analysis and so on.
 
Wang Xiaoying, the doctoral student supervised by Prof. Qu Yunhua of SIS, read out her essay Studies of Chinese Word Frame Driven by Corpus, which obtained wide recognition and praise from both home and overseas scholars. She said, as a fresh doctoral student, it was a great honor for her to read out her essay at AACL 2014, which appealed to so many professors and instructors from different countries. Attending such a high-level conference offered her an opportunity to know the latest academic frontiers and broaden her way of thinking in the future studies. Moreover, it is a chance to identify which level the doctoral students of SIS reside at.
