date:2016-03-10

On March 9, the preparatory meeting of 4thInternational Conference on Critical Heritage Studies (ICCHS) was held in Social Sciences Academy (SSA) of Zhejiang University. Many school leaders were present, including Yuan Qing, deputy dean of SSA, He Lianzhen, dean of School of International Studies (SIS) and deputy dean of SSA, Cao Jinyan, dean of Cultural Heritage Institute, Chen Hong, assistant to the dean of School of Humanities, and Wu Zongjie, director of Institute of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies. Students and teachers in the work team were also present at the meeting.

Director Wu Zongjie first gave an introduction to Zhejiang University’s presidency of 2018 ICCHS. During 2nd ICCHS held in Canberra, Australia from Dec.2 to 4 in 2014, Zhejiang University won the bid to host 4thICCHS, defeating a British university by an obvious advantage. ICCHS is held every other year, and 2016 ICCHS will be held in Montreal, Canada, taking “revolutions brought by cultural heritage” as its theme. ICCHS, hosted by Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS), was held in Goteborg, Sweden in 2012 for the first time with around 500 participants. ACHS aims to address a series of interdisciplinary issues in the field of heritage studies. At that time, its chairman was Laurajane Smith, a professor of School of Archaeology and Museum in Australian National University, director of Centre for Heritage & Museum Studies, and chief editor of International Journal of Heritage Studies. Now, Professor Tim Winter from Deakin University, Australia is the current chairman of ACHS. ACHS is expected to promote the transformation and innovation of cultural heritage studies and practices, so that the studies not only focus on heritage and its preservation methods, but also the close relationship between heritage, culture, society and the public, making heritage the carrier of social development and transformation. ACHS attaches great importance to research on heritage practice from the perspective of humanities and social sciences. Therefore, it is an interdisciplinary dialogue platform with global impact, linking the tangible and the intangible, academic studies and practice.

During the preparatory meeting, the teachers and leaders had a heated discussion on the theme of the 4thICCHS, the cooperation mechanism among different departments, and the leading role of humanities and social sciences in Zhejiang University. The meeting announced SIS and School of Humanities would be the organizers, with the cooperation from relevant departments. By virtue of the scholars of ZJU, it is hoped that the conference will be a great success to display the image of Zhejiang University to the world and promote coordinated development of multi-disciplines by organizing high-level international conferences.
