On Friday afternoon, June 8, 2018, Professor Oswaldo Lorenzo Quiles from the University of Granada gave a lecture entitled Cine, música y cultura de la España del siglo XX (Spanish Film, Music and Culture in 20th Century) at Room 201 of Building East 5.
With time as the main thread, the professor introduced the Spanish culture with a survey of Spain. Professor Oswaldo engaged the audience in the discussion of the definition, range, and forms of culture, and they expressed opinions on culture-related topics including language, education, history, etc.
Professor Oswaldo focused on the interpretation of social elements that constitute the culture (el valor social de la cultura), saying that cultural works in different eras and social contexts will reflect the unique characteristics of the times. He also showed the students and teachers some films and musical pieces from the era of Francisco to modern times, and inspired them to interpret in the backgrounds of society, history, and from the perspective of media and contents.
The students present were active in the Q & A session. The lecture gave them a better understanding of the Spanish culture in 20thcentury. Immersing in the pure language environment of Spanish for two hours, students also became more interested in Spanish learning.
