The Third “Qiushi Cup” International Poetry Composition and Translation Competition Awards Ceremony Held Successfully 

 

With the beautiful spring in Hangzhou in April, a feast of poetry was held in Zhejiang University. On the morning of April 7, 2019, the third “Qiushi Cup” International Poetry Creation and Translation Competition Awards Ceremony was held at the Zijin Hall of Zijingang International Hotel. The competition was hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Zhejiang University, and organized by other 9 units, including the Chinese/American Association for Poetry and Poetics, World Literature, Research Institute of Foreign Literature of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Internet Plus Publication and Communication of Chinese and Foreign Classical Poetry Group of Central China Normal University Press, Zhejiang University Press, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of World Literature of Zhejiang University, Chinese Academy of Translation and Translation Studies. It aims to promote the exchange of international literature and cultures, the humanistic quality of undergraduates, students’ cultural literacy and finally contribute to the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents in Zhejiang University.


The Ceremony was attended by leadership of organizers and co-organizers, including Ju Zhaohui, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of CPC and Director of the International Office of People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, Wu Xiaocheng, Vice Secretary of the the CPC Committee, Huang Huaxin, Director of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Zhejiang University, Nie Zhenzhao, Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of World Literature and an academician of Academia Europaea, Luo Lianggong, President of the Chinese/American Association for Poetry and Poetics and Dean of the School of Language of Central China Normal University, Jiang Hong, Vice Director of the Research Institute of Foreign Literature of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Gao Xing, Chief Editor of the World Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, as well as Zhang Chen, Associate Editor of Zhejiang University Press. Besides, judges of the preliminary contest, and of the final, including distinguished poets Liang Xiaoming, Zang Di, well-known translators Prof. Wu Di and Prof. Liu Wenfei, and Australian poet Dennis Haskell and Russian poet Yury Kublanovskiy, as well as winners of the competition were also present at the Ceremony.


The Ceremony was hosted by Prof. Wang Yong, Vice Director of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, ZJU and director of the organizing committee of the competition. Wu Xiaocheng, Vice Secretary of the CPC Committee of ZJU, on behalf of all the students and teachers, extended his congratulations on the success of the competition and encouraged young poets to be rooted in people. Then the second and third prize winners were presented with awards by Prof. Zeng Wei, Prof. Jiang Hong, Prof. Liang Luogong, poets Liu Xiang and Pa Walong, Prof. Huang Huaxin, Prof. Guo Guoliang, director of the Institute of Translation Studies, Yao Xin, the Secretary of the Party Committee of SIS, ZJU. Vice director Ju Zhaohui and Mr. Dennis Haskell, Prof. Nie Zhenzhao and Mr. Yury Kublanovskiy gave awards to the first prize winners of poetry composition and translation respectively. Poets and scholars also commented on the award-winning works. After that, the poets read and interpreted poems for the audience, making the Ceremony a climax. In the afternoon, the judges, poets and some of the prize winners attended the poetry party in Xixi National Wetland for a warm spring day accompanied by tea and poetry. 


From the collection of works to the announcement of final results, it took 10 months for the organizing committee to receive more than 1,500 copies of entries from more than 500 universities in 7 countries including China, the United States, Russia, Singapore and Germany. All the prize-wining works will be published by the Zhejiang University Press as a collection. The success of this competition has effectively enlarged the impact of the humanities of Zhejiang University and played a significant role in creating a strong humanistic atmosphere, enriching students' campus activities, as well as promoting the cultural exchanges at home and abroad. It is believed that the “Qiushi Cup” International Poetry Composition and Translation Competition will surely have more brilliant achievements in the future.
