From June 17 to 21, 2019, while attending 12th International Milton Symposium (IMS12) in Strasbourg, France, Prof. Hao Tianhu, a Cheung Kong Young Scholar in the School of International Studies, joined the editorial board of Milton Quarterly at the invitation of Edward Jones, Chief Editor of the journal.
Milton is one of the most important poets in the history of English literature--second only to Shakespeare. His epic Paradise Lost has been recited all over the world for hundreds of years. Founded in 1966, Milton Quarterly is recognized by the international academia as a top journal in Milton research. Included by ten authoritative indexing institutions, such as A&HCI and MLA International Bibliography, it has extensive academic influence. Currently, the editorial board is composed of 25 experts on Milton research, the majority of whom are from leading universities in English-speaking countries, such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. Of the current editorial board members, only Hiroko Sano, a Japanese professor, is from the East. Professor Hao Tianhu has devoted himself to the research of Milton for more than 20 years, during which he studied under Prof. Shen Hong and Prof. David Scott Kastan at Peking University and Columbia University respectively. He has delivered lectures “Milton studies” at Peking University and Zhejiang University for a dozen times, and has trained many masters and doctoral students in this field.
In addition to some authoritative journals at home and abroad like Foreign Literature Review, Foreign Literature, Comparative Literature Studies, European Review, Studies in Bibliography, etc., Prof. Hao Tianhu published his papers on Milton research in Milton Quarterly in 2005 and 2012. At the invitation of Prof.Thomas N. Corns, Chief Editor of the journal, he wrote an article for A New Companion to Milton (Wiley Blackwell,2016). His monographMilton in China, a complete project under the National Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation, will be published by Zhejiang University Press.
The international Milton Symposium, held every 3-4 years, is the only international event in this field. Since the Tokyo Symposium in 2012, Prof. Hao Tianhu has been invited to the conference for three times in a row. This year, he made an academic speech entitled “Wither Goes AI: Paradise Lost, Frankenstein, Ex Machina, and the Boundaries of Knowledge” and conducted extensive and in-depth communication with his international counterparts.
